Summer Smylie was my college roommate and sorority Lil Sis. We haven't seen or spoken to each other in a few years but I still love her as much as I did when I saw her everyday. Her little brother Blane is several years younger than her and I have never actually met him. About 6 months ago Blane was involved in a car accident that broke almost every bone in his body. Only 2 weeks ago did his doctor release him to go back to work. Prior to going back he called his big sister and said he wanted to go to the lake before he had to go back to work. He lives in Weatherford, OK and Summer lives in Dallas so they met at Lake Texoma with Blanes girlfriend, Anita as well has his best friend and his girlfriend. For some reason, I'm not sure about yet, they were having trouble getting the boat out of the water. Blane decided to dive in to help. He did not know he was in water only waist high. Summer stated that as soon as he hit the water his body went limp and she knew what had just happened to her baby brother. Summer has a little lifeguard experience so was able to get into the water and turn him over so that he could breathe and stabilize him enough until the helicopter could land to transport him. Blane crushed his C6 and broke his C5. He was in surgery most of the day Sunday to try and repair his spine.
The latest report that I received on Tuesday was that Blane was able to bend his elbows and feel some touch on his legs but still unable to move his legs. His biceps are working but his triceps are not. He is not yet able to grip. He will be transported to Denver, CO as soon as the OKC ICU can stabilize his blood pressure, which as of today was really good.
Summer is not doing well. She is having all kinds of guilt and fear and grief. Blane's spirits are pretty good. For those of you who will read this please visit the facebook page Blane's friends have set up for him,
Support for Smylie, and try to help in any way you can. If not monetarily, please pray!
